Here I explored the relationship between people and objects, specifically in how people can identify with objects and how objects represent identity. I wanted to take a conceptual approach to transformative futures, thinking about how these objects can mutate and manifest as part of our identity and be a form of self-expression - through body, space, movement, styling and mise-en-scéne. A language which everyone can understand, “an authentic voice” (Miller, 2008). Fashion can also be a form of self-expression - objects and fashion share that similarity, they are a form of self-expression and are both part of our daily lives. When we make decisions to buy and own an object it can be motivated by our sense of identity – either to strengthen a sense of self or by a desire to transform our identity. However, this is not always the case, we buy some items just for their practical qualities.
We are living in a time where mass production is industry standard thus we are increasingly navigating a world of more and more new objects, having these objects impact our habits without realising it. I wanted to explore how these objects influence our bodies and how our bodies influence and shape objects as they become part of our daily ritual through styling, image-making, art direction, curation and graphic design (in a form of a zine).
